Preventive care
Preventive care is worthwhile your whole life. Good habits at home and regular checkups with Bush Dentistry keep your smile bright and healthy for many years.
Simple ways to prevent plaque and cavities
- Brush at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, and brush the top of your tongue to keep your breath fresh.
- Floss at least once a day, to reach plaque and food between the teeth and under the gumline.
- Eat a balanced diet and go easy on sugary treats. Raw vegetables, plain yogurt, cheese and fruit help keep a smile healthy.
- Ask us about sealants: protective coatings on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where decay often starts.
- If you play sports, ask about a mouthguard designed to protect your smile.
Brushing, step by step
Angle
Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gum.
Circles
Brush gently in a circular motion, on the outer, inner and chewing surfaces of each tooth.
The tip
Use the tip of the brush for the inner surface of your front teeth.
Flossing, step by step
Wind
Wind about 18 inches of floss around your fingers, most of it around one finger.
Guide
Use your thumbs and forefingers to guide about one inch of floss between your teeth, holding it tight and gently sawing.
Curve
Curve the floss into a C against one tooth, slide it gently beneath the gum, then up and down. Repeat for each tooth.
