Pediatric dentistry

A child's first visit should be enjoyable. Children are not born afraid of the dentist, but they can fear the unknown, so we use pleasant, simple words for every step and help your family feel at ease from the moment you arrive.

The first visit

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children visit the dentist by their first birthday, so newly erupted teeth, which appear between six and 12 months, get proper care and good habits start early.

When new teeth arrive

Baby teeth begin to come in between six and 12 months and continue until about age three, and the gums can feel tender and sore. Rub a clean finger or a cool, wet cloth across them, or use a teething ring. When teething is done your child will have 20 primary teeth. Permanent teeth begin at about age six and continue until 21; adults have 28 permanent teeth, or 32 with wisdom teeth.

Healthy habits

  • Brush twice a day, after breakfast and at bedtime, and floss at least once a day.
  • Start brushing as soon as the first tooth arrives, with fluoride toothpaste: a smear the size of a grain of rice up to age three, then a pea-sized amount.
  • Dispense the toothpaste for young children, and supervise and help with brushing.
  • Check the teeth regularly for lines or discoloration that may be decay.

Checkups that prevent decay

Children are at high risk for tooth decay, so your little one should visit every six months for a cleaning and checkup. We recommend fluoride treatments twice a year with cleanings, and sealants to protect the deep grooves of the teeth. Sealants last several years and are checked at every visit.

I was glad to get our family of five in for cleanings, X-rays, and exams all at the same time. The hygienists were so kind, caring, and outgoing with our daughters. I loved how they take time to explain what they are doing, show them their instruments, and make it so fun to count and clean teeth. Thank you for making our trip to the dentist a very positive experience.
